This past week we read a lot of great things, but one hit close to home. This being about the things we too have heard being said about community members in Minidoka and about the changes in our schools.  There are some wonderful things that are taking place, especially in the past couple of…

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The Burley-Minico football game is over and the food has been counted and delivered to our door. Santa’s elves at the Mini Cassia Christmas Council truly appreciate the generosity of our communities. We are back to work putting together Christmas packages for…

As a member of the Minidoka Schools Community, I am quite bothered in the way a number of people, “patrons” as we are known as, but I prefer to say that I am also a voter, home owner and tax payer as well and how we have been labeled by various school district employees, some who are administ…

To the city of Burley - I would like to know why the City gives up on its flowers so early in the fall. They are so beautiful all summer long and then it seems that right after Labor Day they quit watering them and in just a few short weeks they are looking shabby. Then last week the city be…

I responded to a recent Sound Off that was rather negative in regards to the KFAC renting out it’s spaces to a church.  They are erroneous on many counts, but here was my response on facebook.

I’ve been a Hunter Education instructor for 25 years. Recently we held a field day class for online students at Walt Charles Gun Club located at 100 East 324 South, Rupert, Idaho not at the Rupert City Shooting Range located at 500 North Meridian, Rupert, Idaho.

I recently saw a social media post announcing the launch of he Water’s Edge Fellowship “Church” being held in the Little Theatre at Burley High School. As a tax paying citizen of this community I take issue with ANY “church” holding weekly services on public school property. As a Christian m…

We are writing in regards to the many letters and comments appearing here for a while now over the schools in our area. These letters come from educated people who are acting like children.

To the gentleman we saw and helped on Monday morning who fell after leaving the kids detention center, who fell up the street, we hope that you are ok.  We have been concerned and had not see you about in the market or local places since then. We know you did get hurt and could tell from how…

On Sept.13th, We had the honor to cook for the Flag Education Day for the entire 5th grade classes in the Minidoka County Schools, what a day it was The busses arrived @ 9 a.m. As I watched the children unload from the busses, (I thought here we go!!)Mass confusion  here we come!!, boy was I…

I would like to take a moment to thank the people that stopped to alert us of a garage and house fire we had on the morning of 9/7/19. If it had not been for you folks honking and yelling in our driveway, things could have been a whole lot worse. Thank you Gerald C., and some others that I d…

I wanted to thank the magician at the veterans car show on the Rupert square on Saturday. The kids are still talking about you. Levi, Acelynn, and Ryan are really loving the special cards you gave them. Us grown-ups are loving it too. Thanks again. What fun.

We are Burley residents and we’d like to respond to the Sound Off published Sept. 3 regarding splitting the Cassia County School District. First and foremost, we’d like to say we wholeheartedly approve of the writer’s idea to split the county schools away from Burley. We are in complete agre…

Governor Little is following in his predecessor’s footsteps by creating yet another task force to study the next steps Idaho should take when it comes to investing in education. In the meantime, the legislature takes piecemeal steps to restore investments in our schools post “great recession…

Editor’s Note: The following submission is a response to the previous Sound Off. As the editor of the Weekly Mailer I felt that an immediate reply from the district would be helpful to the community and could help share the school district’s position.

I’m going to take a few moments of time to talk about this new concealed carry, being implemented by some of our stores. Number one - it’s not the guns that are killing people, it’s not the knives or any other type of weapon, if a person wants to he or she can make one. Are they going to pen…

Greetings Patriotic American: The following is a true American experience when guns were confiscated.

Concerning your analysis of El Mirador Taqueria, in your second paragraph you admit that it is a Mexican Restaurant. I was in Mexico for 17 months and never saw ground meat. Hamburger is ground up meat that is not otherwise marketable. Hamburg is in northern Germany and if you want hamburger…

I am writing a letter of gratitude about my veterinarian Dr. Clyde Gillespie from the Animal Medical Clinic in Heyburn. He is truly in this profession because he loves animals and not just to get a paycheck.

First, I agree with the recent “Sound Off” letter I read, about Cassia Schools.  I think that the School Board feels that ‘in order to pass a bond, everyone (school community) has to get something or it won’t pass’ and it creates a lot of waste and mismanagement.  It’s also accurate, as the …

I have been thinking a lot in regards to the Cassia County School District and the issues that we are facing.  I have tried to keep and open mind pertaining to the bonds and the reasons why they have failed in the past. I know a few of the School Board members personally and think they are w…

I admit to having trouble understanding the rationalization of gun control. Why do we think guns are the problem? When a drunk driver causes an accident in which people are killed we never blame the automobile. When a driver falls asleep and crosses the median and hits a family in a minivan …

On behalf of the Magic Valley Folk Festival, I would like to thank the Mini-Cassia area for supporting this year’s festival.  We had a wonderful experience with dancers and musicians from Croatia, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, and Taiwan.  They danced and shared their cultures with us…

Congress and the White House agree to expand definition of war eras to include all who served since Dec. 7, 1941.

On a recent tour of the area cemeteries for a genealogy project, I found myself appalled and embarrassed at the status of several of our cemetery listings in our area. With the exception of Paul and the Minidoka Cemetery listings, they are horribly out of date and in poor condition.  My pare…

Navigating Early Childhood Education

Recently a horrible tragedy occurred which seemed to suck the very air from our lungs.  In this difficult time, we found ourselves surrounded by heroes.  At that moment, when the pain seemed beyond our ability to bear, our community gathered us into their collective arms and carried us throu…

I have been thinking about the recent situation with the Cassia School District and the decisions they have made with the custodians. I recognize that without the bond passing the district will need to make some compromises but is the decision they have made in the best interest of anybody? …

Thank you! Nick Lynch at Lynch Oil, Jeff Bronson at Lee’s Furniture, Corporate Image, Taco Bandido, Laws Insurance and Skaggs Furniture for donating to our Burley Barracuda Swim Team.  We are working to get starting blocks for the Burley Pool.

Recently I was traveling down 500 South on my motorcycle when I encountered a sprinkler that was spraying water across both lanes of traffic. It was the end nozzle on a pivot.  I stopped to wait for the sprinkler to rotate and clear the road.  The left lane was clearing faster than the lane …

Really sad that, when kids were asked on TV what their favorite part of the parade was, their answer was “the candy”.  Guess you can’t really blame them because at the parade I went to there were no marching bands, no clowns, and very few floats.  Not even an Honor Guard carrying the flag.  …

Once again like always I have a complaint whoever it is that runs off cats on 20th street in Heyburn or worse continues to do it along with knocking on windows early in the morning. Whether it is kids or an adult I would like it to stop.

On the 11th of June there was a question in Sound Off asking where have all the songbirds gone?

I recently signed my son up to play tackle football at OTRD. They have a new tackle football program that they have started this year. When I heard about tackle football with the OTRD I was excited because all my kids participate in their programs. OTRD does such a great job with all their p…

As you may know, the Cassia County Education Association has filed a grievance against the Cassia County School District over the decision terminate 60 custodial and maintenance workers and violations of open meetings laws. We know that continuity of staff, both certified and classified, is …

What has happened to all the songbirds?  We lived in south Burley for several years and noticed the only birds around were many, many crows, and never once could we see or hear a robin, meadowlark, or other birds singing.  Only the rough caws of crows, who had obviously driven all other ki…

With the passing of everyone’s friend Joan Paar, our community feels the loss of one of our very finest.  Joan had an amazing ability to always be gracious and kind to everyone.  She would make each person, adult or child, feel important and special.  She loved this community and was such an…

What is happening to Maintenance and Custodians?

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has been asked by the Snake River Council of Boy Scouts of America if they are willing to sponsor a Troop.  The VFW voted to sponsor a troop.  We need boys and leaders for such a troop.  The VFW hall, 554 Highland in Burley will be the meeting place.

In regards to voting for yet another millions of dollars bond (that allowing the lottery into Idaho promised residents would no longer have to have bonds, levies, etc.!).  If the residents of Minidoka County and its towns knew of how wasteful said schools are with the monies they are given, …
