The Minidoka Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest is seeking public comments on the Raft River Range and Riparian Projects Draft Environmental Assessment. The proposed action would authorize a range of water development and fence projects on the Rosette C&H and West End C&H allotments in the Raft River Division.
What is being proposed?
The purpose of the project is to move riparian and aspen vegetative communities towards desired condition on two cattle grazing allotments in the Raft River mountains. Projects identified will help to improve riparian and wetland conditions and to improve livestock management through enhanced fencing and improved water developments. Eleven water development and fence sites have been identified for reconstruction, relocation, improvement or new construction. Relocating troughs away from springs and aspen stands will reduce pressure on vegetative resources. New fencelines or spring protection fences will protect spring and stream sources and allow areas to recover. New fences and water developments will improve grazing management success by providing flexibility in rest-rotation systems and distributing livestock away from valuable riparian areas. These projects were developed in coordination with grazing permittees, the Utah Watershed Restoration Initiative, the Utah Grazing Improvement Program and the Box Elder County Coordinated Resource Management group.
The deciding official is Minidoka District Ranger Randy Thompson. For more information regarding this project please visit the project’s website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=56797.
