Every ten years, when a census is conducted, a school district reviews their zoning for elected school board trustees. Idaho codes provides a process for re-zoning, which includes a provision for adding zones.

Chairman Heber Loughmiller would like the Board to engage in rezoning based on the new census data released this month and the desire to add an additional zone in what is currently zone 5. Zone 5 encompasses areas of Declo, Raft River, Malta, Elba and Almo.

In speaking of the possible changes, Chairman Loughmiller notes that “in an effort to make sure every community is represented to the fullest extent possible, the Board is exploring the creation of a 6th trustee zone. This would hopefully create zones where trustees more clearly represent communities in which they live. “

Superintendent Sandra Miller adds that, “the Board will follow Idaho code and will work with school district legal counsel, along with the Idaho State School Boards Association and the Idaho State Board of Education to satisfy statutory requirements.” The Board process will include community notice of meetings.
