Volunteers Needed

RUPERT - Memorial Day 2020 is coming up.  As a reminder, this holiday is meant to honor the men and women who died while serving our country. In observance of the holiday, volunteers often place American Flags on Veterans’ gravesites at national and local cemeteries.  The Rupert cemetery is no different.  There is a group of people that do this the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend.

Four years ago there was a need noticed, new flags were needed.  There were several anonymous donations made to the flag account…THANK YOU. Donations were also sent to the American Legion Post 10 and then the American Legion Post 10 topped off the amount needed to purchase 500 new flags!

Continued donations will be needed as flags fade or get torn.  The flags that this group place will have a yellow indicator around the stem of the flag, please do not take these flags.  They are used year after year.

Flags will be placed at the Rupert Cemetery again this year and like last year volunteers are needed.

Flags are put up the Friday before Memorial Day, May 22nd beginning at 5:00pm.

Flags will be removed Tuesday, May 26th, at 4pm.

Due to the social distancing rules, you will need to remember to stay 6 feet away from others that are also placing flags. We will have a map of the cemetery and it will be marked as to where others are and where flags have already been placed. Flags will have been wiped down with Clorox wipes before going to the cemetery.

The cemetery does not have a listing of each Veteran’s final resting place, so it does take a little bit of time to find them all.  Some graves are not marked with any type of military insignia, so it is not known to the volunteers to mark that grave.  If your loved one has been missed in the past, please contact the number listed below.  Remember to be patient and kind as they are doing the best they can.

The volunteers who do this are not with any organization; just a group of people that believe honoring our countries’ Veterans is very important. Everyone is welcome to join us in this humbling experience.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact Ray “Spook” Breeding at (208) 650-5345
